HOHHOT, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Water areas of three major lakes in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region remain largely stable compared with the figures from last year, according to the regional meteorological bureau on Wednesday.

Meteorological satellite monitoring data showed that the water areas of Hulun Lake and Ulan Suhai Lake rose slightly compared with the figures from 2013. The area of Daihai Lake is broadly unchanged from last year.

Located in the hinterland of the Hulun Buir Grasslands, Hulun Lake is the fourth largest freshwater lake in China. As the precipitation in most parts of Inner Mongolia has increased since June, the water area of Hulun Lake hit about 2,061.1 square km, up 0.3 percent year on year.

Ulan Suhai Lake, located in the north bank of the middle reaches of the Yellow River, is the largest freshwater lake in China's Yellow River basin. Its water area now reaches approximately 320.1 square km, which is 3.4 percent higher than that of last year. Meanwhile, the water quality of the lake has also improved.

Daihai Lake, the third largest inland lake of the region, has an area of 51.7 square km this year, which is unchanged from last year.
