BRATISLAVA, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Canada tied their quarterfinal game against Switzerland in the last second and sealed their turnaround effort in overtime 3-2 at the Ice Hockey World Championship on Thursday.

Things were not looking good for Canada. The 26-time world champions were only one second away from bidding farewell to the 2019 Worlds. The Swiss capitalized on two powerplays by the hands of Sven Andrighetto and Nico Hischier. The author of Canada's lonely goal was Mark Stone who redirected Dante Fabbro's shot in the second period.

The Swiss were leading 2-1 the entire third period but Canada had nothing to lose and pulled their goalie. Their strong final effort was rewarded and the puck landed in Leonardo Genoni's net almost in sync with the final siren. A referee's review had to confirm Damon Severson's slap shot made it through traffic in time, but after a long judgment, the goal was called good.

Five minutes into the ten-minute 3-on-3 powerplay, Mark Stone's second goal of the night crowned Canada's astounding comeback and sent the last year's silver medalists from Switzerland home. Canada triumphed over the Swiss the same way as in the last year's semifinals.
