KIGALI, April 2 (Xinhua) -- The number of Rwandan households connected to electricity increased from 10 percent in 2010 to 51 percent as of February 2019, the Rwanda Energy Group (REG) said in a statement on Monday.

Among the households which have access to electricity, 37 percent are connected to the national grid while 14 percent are connected through off-grid solution, mainly solar energy and mini-grids, the national energey corporation said in the statement.

The government of Rwanda has taken a policy decision to diversify the sources of electricity by adding mini-grid and off-grid connections to traditional dominant grid connections, it said.

Productive users will be all connected before the end of 2021, according to the statement.

The landlocked country seeks to increase electricity production both on and off grid to ensure that 100 percent households will have electricity by 2024

Currently Hydro power accounts for 42 percent of the total energy sources of Rwanda, thermal accounts for 31 percent, solar accounts for 5 percent and methane takes 14 percent, the Rwandan instrastructure ministry said last September.
