UNITED NATIONS, March 15 (Xinhua) -- The Security Council on Friday unanimously approved "a technical roll-over" of the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for six months.

The 15-member Security Council adopted Resolution 2460 to extend UNAMA's mandate till Sept. 17, 2019.

UNAMA had its mandate renewed by 12 months in the past. The six-month extension, which is much longer than a typical technical roll-over of one month, was believed to have been designed to minimize the impact on preparations for the presidential election in Afghanistan scheduled for July.

Resolution 2460 reiterates full support to the work of UNAMA and stresses the need to ensure continued adequate resources for UNAMA to fulfill its mandate.

It recognizes that the renewed mandate of UNAMA is in support of Afghanistan's full assumption of leadership and ownership in the security, governance, and development areas.
