UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- UN Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock on Wednesday announced the release of 10 million U.S. dollars to help contain Ebola in central Africa.

The money from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) will be used to mitigate the possible impact of the current Ebola outbreak should it spread to countries neighboring the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), said the fund in a press release.

"The response agencies, led by the World Health Organization (WHO), are doing a remarkable job in containing the Ebola outbreak in eastern DRC, but it is important to support neighboring countries too. Early action financed by CERF is a priority, given the major impact the virus could have if it should spread to neighboring countries," said Lowcock.

The allocation is in addition to 4.5 million dollars already allocated by CERF to UN agencies inside DRC at the early onset of the outbreaks of Ebola earlier this year.
