ISLAMABAD, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday said that there was no military solution to the Afghan conflict and the issue can only be solved through political negotiations.

Addressing a meeting of the federal cabinet in Islamabad, Khan said that he was happy that Washington was realizing the need for a non-military solution to the ongoing Afghan war.

"I have been saying this for 15 years that negotiations are the only solution to Afghan problem," Khan said, adding that Pakistani government would try to bring peace to Afghanistan through reconciliation process.

Khan also spoke about his meeting with U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad, who arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday morning on a two-day visit.

"Khalilzad was sent by U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss the Afghan peace process and I am happy that I met him," he said.

Khalilzad started his Pakistan visit a day after Khan said that he has received a letter from Trump, seeking Pakistan's support in negotiated settlement of the conflict in Afghanistan.

Khalilzad also held meetings with the Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua on Tuesday and discussed peace and political settlement in Afghanistan.
