BUDAPEST, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- The number of fatal accidents in Hungary's agriculture sector decreased by 33 percent last year, according to official sources here on Tuesday.

"This a significant achievement," said Sandor Bodo, state secretary at the Finance Ministry in charge of employment policy here during a conference called Agriculture in Focus.

Bodo explained that the conference was the closing event of a two-year campaign focusing on the safety of workplaces, a campaign realized with the help of the European Union (EU).

"Most accidents have been caused by tractors and other self-propelled agricultural machinery in recent years, and these equipment and machines have been carefully monitored by the Labor Safety Authority," Bodo explained, adding that the main cause of the accidents was the lack of knowledge and noncompliance with safety regulations.

The information campaign will continue in the future in order to further reduce the number of workplace accidents or bring them to zero casualties.

In 2016, 18 people died in agriculture-related accidents in Hungary, 12 in 2017 and only 9 so far in the first three quarters of 2018.
