SHARM EL SHEIKH, Egypt, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- A new partnership was announced on Sunday at the UN Biodiversity Conference 2018 to hasten the achievements of global goals on biodiversity.

Kathy Mackinnon, chair of the International Conservation Union (IUCN) world commission on protected areas, told journalists in Egypt that the partnership will help intensify activities that were set during the conference in Japan's Aichi to increase protected and conserved areas.

"So far, 38 partners including UN agencies, governments, regional blocks and world conservation agencies have signed the new agreement to hasten the Aichi targets and scale up efforts post 2020," Mackinnon told journalists.

"The partnership will also lead countries towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and improve their economies," she added.

Sarat Gidda, secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, said that the partnership is also aimed at helping countries to put their own standards that could be replicated by other member states.

The UN Biodiversity Conference 2018 has been ongoing since Nov. 13 in Egypt's Red Sea resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh and due to end on Nov. 29.

Representatives from over 190 states participate the conference under the slogan of "investing in biodiversity for people and plan."
