KAMPALA, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Wednesday unveiled the country's first ever cable-stayed bridge.

Museveni said while commissioning the bridge named Source of the Nile Bridge that the country is making effort to use road transport for light cargo while the railway will be for heavy cargo.

The ceremony was telecast live across the country.

The 525 meter long bridge was built across River Nile, in the eastern Ugandan district of Jinja.

The iconic dual carriage facility is another major connection to the busy import-export route for Uganda through Kenya. Goods in transit to or from Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan will also use the bridge.

The 112.6 million U.S. dollar bridge is designed to last 120 years and will lift the weight off the old Nalubaale Bridge whose 50-year life span expired in 2004.
