KABUL, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 60,000 tons of wheat have been transported to 20 drought-affected Afghan provinces as per part of a government counter-drought plan, the government said on Sunday.

A pervasive drought has affected hundreds of thousands of people in 22 of the country's 34 provinces.

The government plans to distribute 92,000 tons of wheat among the needy people in 34 provinces of the land-locked country before the winter, Government Media and Information Center (GIMC) said in a statement.

The distribution process of the wheat, provided by the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and livestock would soon be started among the vulnerable districts, the statement added.

Based on the plan, 9,954 tons of feedstuffs have also been distributed among livestock-owners in eight provinces of the country.

Potable water was part of the program to have been supplied for 190,000 households in Faryab, Badghis, Jawzjan, Nimruz, Sar-e-Pul, Takhar and Dykundi provinces, while 145,000 drought affected people received healthcare services in 20 provinces of the country, the statement added.

The International aid agencies and NGOs in coordination with the Afghan State Ministry for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Affairs have also codified a program, under which, people in insecure areas, would properly receive aids in two phases, according to the statement.

Up to 934,368 people in 71 districts of 12 provinces have received support and enjoyed assistance, within the international agencies and NGOs aid-supply framework, in the recent three months elsewhere in Afghanistan.
