TIRIN KOT, Afghanistan, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- A total of 10 militants have been confirmed dead as a clash broke out between security forces and the Taliban militants in Khas Uruzgan district of southern Uruzgan province on Monday, an army spokesman in the southern region Ahmad Sadeq Eisa said Tuesday.

Seven more militants have been injured as the fighting raged on Monday in the restive district, the official added.

Without hinting at possible casualties of the security forces, the official asserted that the government forces backed by airpower would continue to pound the insurgents' positions in Khas Uruzgan district and adjoining areas.

Taliban militants haven't commented.
