RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- The gap between leading candidate for the Brazilian presidential elections Jair Bolsonaro and runner-up Fernando Haddad narrowed in a new poll released on Friday.

According to the poll by consulting company Datafolha, the voting intentions for Bolsonaro, from the Social Liberal Party (PSL), was 28 percent while that for Haddad, who replaced Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as the Workers' Party's (PT) candidate, reached 22 percent.

In a previous poll released on Sept. 20, Bolsonaro garnered a voting intention of 28 percent versus 19 percent for Haddad.

In the new poll, voting intentions for Ciro Gomes, from the Democratic Labor Party (PDT), ranked the third with 11 percent. Geraldo Alckmin, from the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB), has 10 percent while Marina Silva, from the Sustainability Network Party (Rede), has 5 percent.

The Datafolha poll was carried out on Sept. 26-28 among 9,000 electors from all over the country. The margin of error is two points.

Though Bolsonaro has the lead in the first round, he loses to Haddad in second-round simulations by 39 versus 45 percent, which is a significant shift from the previous poll when the two candidates were tied at 39 percent.

The projected second round results are explained by Bolsonaro's high rejection rate, which rose from 43 to 46 percent in this poll. Haddad's rejection rate also increased three points, but is much lower at 32 percent.
