BERLIN, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Almost two weeks after the start of aggressive protests in Germany's Chemnitz, thousands of protesters gathered in the city again on Friday evening, the German Press Agency (DPA) reported.

According to the police, about 2,350 participants belonged to the right-wing populist camp, and 1,000 counter-demonstrators stood on the side of the Alliance "Chemnitz free of Nazi", according to the DPA.

At the same time, the cultural institutions of the city organized an open-air concert of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony as a statement against xenophobia, incitement and violence. Despite a rain shower, about 5,000 people attended the concert on a square.

Police kept two camps separated with barriers and reported that the situation remained almost free of trouble.

A 35-year-old German was killed in a knife attack in Chemnitz in August, two others were injured. The incidence sparked a series of xenophobic demonstrations, as well as counter-protests in the city.
