TRIPOLI, Sep. 2 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the ongoing deadly violence in and around Libya's capital Tripoli, the UN Support Mission in Libya said Sunday.

The condemnation of the UN chief targets "in particular the indiscriminate shelling by armed groups, which has led to the casualties of civilians, including children," Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, said in a statement published by the UN Mission in Libya.

"The indiscriminate use of force is a violation of international humanitarian and human rights law," said Dujarric on behalf of Guterres.

"The Secretary-General calls on all parties to immediately cease hostilities and abide by the cease-fire agreement brokered by the United Nations and the Reconciliation Committees," the statement added.

Southern Tripoli has been witnessing violent clashes between government forces and armed militias in the past week, killing at least 41 and injuring 123 others.

The Libyan interior ministry on Friday announced a cease-fire in Tripoli under the auspices of the United Nations. However, witnesses said heavy gun firing and explosions could still be heard in some parts of the capital city.?
