PARIS, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- French main flag carrier Air France has decided to suspend services to Tehran in September, blaming U.S. sanctions which it said would weaken the line's performance, the airline announced on Thursday.

The French arm of Franco-Dutch airlines group Air France KLM said it would stop flights to Iran on Sept. 18 "because of low business profitability."

The flag carrier said since Aug. 4 it has sharply reduced services from four flights to one on weak demand.

Two other major European airlines, British Airways and KLM, also decided to close the route to Tehran on falling profits.

In May, the United States announced withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal and that it would reimpose sanctions on Tehran and those trading with it.

In the wake of the U.S. decision, European firms doing business in Iran have up to six months to wind up investments.
