HARARE, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Businesses remained closed in Harare's Central Business District following Wednesday's violence with the police maintaining a heavy presence at the MDC-T headquarters with armored vehicles and water cannons.

An uneasy calm prevailed within the city center after the police cleared the streets of protesters. Many people were trying to establish places where banks and their preferred shops remained open.

A fuel attendant at a service station along Sam Nujoma Street said they were being cautious with motorists who were coming to fill up their vehicles.

"We have to make sure that these are genuine customers and not looters," he said.

Opposition supporters took to the streets on Wednesday denouncing the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) for delaying the release of results from the July 30 general elections.

The protest degenerated with looting taking over and the military moving in to quell the protests and firing at the protesters. Three people died in the skirmishes.
