DOHA, July 22 (Xinhua) -- The Qatar Charity has launched a new project to cultivate agricultural lands in the Gaza Strip, local media reported on Sunday.

The charity said the project, worth around 300,000 U.S. dollars, aims to support Palestinian farmers to face the hard farming conditions, reported Qatar-based newspaper Qatar Tribune.

"The project is designed to encourage local agriculture to achieve self-sufficiency in production of basic crops," said director of the charity's office in Gaza Strip, Mohamed Abu Haloub.

It noted that the first phase includes the provision of eight electrical transformers to supply 42 wells with the power to irrigate more than 7,500 acres (30.3 square km) of agricultural land.

The second phase will deal with the cultivation of more than 100 acres of land and planting fruit trees.

The charity has a number of implementation projects for Palestinians. Last year, it handed over 50 apartments to the low-income families in the Gaza Strip.

However, the charity was accused of funding terrorist organizations by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia.

The four Arab states cut diplomatic ties and severed air, land and sea links with Qatar on June 5, 2017, accusing it of supporting extremism, which Qatar has denied.
