PYEONGCHANG, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Arnd Peiffer claimed the second biathlon gold for Germany by winning the men's 10 km sprint in 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games at the Alpensia Biathlon Center here on Sunday.

Peiffer put in a flawless display of shooting to finish the sprint in 23 minutes and 38.8 seconds.

"It's crazy because I didn't expect it was possible for me to be on top. I wouldn't say I am an underdog but I'm not one of the top guys," said Peiffer, who just won the third place in the Antholz sprint in January.

It was the 30-year-old Peiffer's first Olympic gold medal and his second Olympic medal.

"I eat a banana at exactly 30 minutes before going out. It is my secret. It doesn't matter if it is big or small, I just stick to the ritual." Peiffer added.

Peiffer, the 2011 world champion, became the sixth man to claim the world title and Olympic title in this event.

Michal Krcmar of the Czech Republic finished in 23 minutes, 43.2 seconds to take the silver, while Italy's Dominik Windisch got the bronze in 23:46.5.

World No. 1 Martin Fourcade of France was placed eighth after missing his fair share of the five shooting targets from the prone position, while world No. 2 Johannes Boe of Norway was 31st after missing three shots from the prone position and one of five from the standing position.

Laura Dahlmeier claimed Germany's first biathlon gold by winning the women's 7.5km sprint on Saturday.
