TRIPOLI, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Libya destroyed more than 200 tons of Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) with the support of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), the UN Support Mission said later on Thursday.

"UNMAS completed phase one of its initiative at the end of January 2018, which is to destroy ERW that have been endangering the lives of Misratan communities, and of the wider Libyan population," said the mission.

With the support of the governments of Denmark and South Korea, generous contributors to the United Nations Voluntary Trust Fund for Assistance in Mine Action, the 203 tons of ERW were successfully destroyed, the mission added.

According to the mission, phase two of the initiative aims to eliminate at least 200 more tons of ERW and is supported by the government of France.

Years of armed conflict in Libya have left large amounts of unexploded ordnance, which have killed and injured many soldiers and civilians.
