MEXICO CITY, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Mexico is looking to strengthen its electricity supply in the southeast of the country with the construction of new power generation facilities, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced on Friday.

Lopez Obrador said in his daily press conference that although the power supply for all of the country is guaranteed by the state-run Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), there are some regions in which the government seeks to expand the supply.

"We've localized where the reinforcement is going to be made, particularly in the southeast, in the Yucatan Peninsula, which requires transmission lines and the construction of new generation plants," the president said.

Lopez Obrador also pointed out that the maintenance work that the current CFE plants have gone through since the new administration began on Dec. 1, 2018 has ensured increasing volume of energy output as well as significant savings.

According to official data, the 596 maintenance works carried out so far have recovered 4,747 megawatts of electricity and the CFE seeks to achieve a total recovery in power generation capacity of 5,900 megawatts by the end of the year.
