SARAJEVO, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Germany will contribute additional 200,000 euros (233,655 U.S. dollars) to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) for the destruction of unstable ammunition stocks in BiH, the Germany embassy in BiH said Monday in a statement.

The money will be spent on the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) "EXPLODE+" project which aims to destruct some 8,000 tons of old, dangerous weapons and ammunition.

"This year, the money will be primarily used for the destruction of anti-tank missiles. There are still about eight thousand tons of old, dangerous ammunition, which must be destroyed as soon as possible," said German ambassador to BiH Christiane Hohmann.

With it, Germany's total amount of money allocated for ammunition destruction over the past four years amounts to 1.3 million euros.

UNDP Resident Representative to BiH Sezin Sinanoglu said that the remaining weapons pose a danger to the lives of people here, adding that the destruction of weapons will be done in a way to take care of the environment.

Due to the 1990s war, BiH has a large stock of excess weapons and ammunition. In BiH, there are still about 15,000 tons of ammunition stock and 40,000 pieces of weapons, which are mostly over 35 years old.

Approximately 14,600 tons of ammunition have been destroyed in the past ten years in BiH.
