BERLIN, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Germany saw its warmest May since 1881 last month, the German Weather Service (DWD) reported on Monday.

With an average temperature of 16 degrees, May 2018 was 3.9 degrees warmer than the multi-year mean of the monthly values from 1961 to 1990.

And it was also the second monthly temperature record after a new high in April, according to the DWD report.

The DWD said, the high temperatures throughout Germany in May were accompanied by frequent thunderstorms, heavy precipitation and local flood events in the south and west of the country and a drought in the north.

The DWD said in its report that, setting a new temperature record in Germany for two months in a row is a very rare event and so far has only occurred in November and December 2015 in the past a hundred years.

As a result of climate change, new record high monthly temperatures have become increasingly common over the past decades, while new lows were hardly seen. The last monthly low was registered in 1956, said the DWD.
