ZAGREB, April 18 (Xinhua) -- A delegation of the Croatian Parliament led by Speaker Gordan Jandrokovic halted the official visit to Serbia and returned home on Wednesday, after an incident caused by Serbian parliament member Vojislav Seselj who trampled the Croatian flag.

The incident occurred in front of the Belgrade National Assembly building, when Vojislav Seselj grabbed a Croatian flag and insulted the Croatian delegation.

The Croatian delegation decided to return to Zagreb soon after the incident.

"Despite a very good start of the official visit and commitment to do the best for the improvement of relations between the two countries, because of this act, which has grossly violated the dignity of the Republic of Croatia, the Croatian Parliament broke up the visit," said a statement of the Speaker of the Parliament.

Gordan Jandrokovic is the first Croatian Parliament Speaker to come to Belgrade for an official visit. He was scheduled to meet with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Prime Minister Ana Brnabic on Thursday.

Before the incident, during the talks between Jandrokovic and his counterpart of Serbian National Assembly Maja Gojkovic, it was stated that it was a "historic visit", and although Croatia and Serbia disagree on many topics, "it is necessary to talk about everything".
