NAY PYI TAW, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's president-elect U Win Myint will be sworn into office on Friday, the Union Parliament announced Thursday.

First vice president-elect U Myint Swe and second vice president-elect U Henry Van Thio will also take the oath of office in the presence of Union Parliament Speaker U Mann Win Khaing Than at the swearing-in ceremony.

The ceremony will be followed by a speech by the new president.

U Win Myint, former speaker of the House of Representatives, was elected as Myanmar's new president in the presidential election on Wednesday, becoming the country's 10th president since 1948 when it regained independence.

The presidential run was hosted by the Union Parliament to fill the presidency vacancy left by U Htin Kyaw, who announced resignation last week, citing health reasons.

In the presidential election contested among three vice presidents, U Win Myint, nominated by the House of Representatives, won with 403 votes or over 63 percent of the total cast by 636 MPs in the presidential election.

U Myint Swe, nominated by the military, won 211 votes, while U Henry Van Thio, nominated by the House of Nationalities, gained 18 votes with four cancelled.

U Win Myint resigned from speaker of the House of Representatives (Lower House) last week but was re-elected as vice president and nominated as a candidate for the presidential election.

U Win Myint, a member of the National League for Democracy (NLD), was elected earlier as a parliament member to the House of Representatives from Pathein constituency in the 2012 by-election and was again elected to the same house from Tammwe constituency in the 2015 general election.

He became speaker of the House of Representatives in 2016 serving in his capacity until he was elected as president.
