SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- A fierce gunfight between militants and Indian troops broke out Friday in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight erupted at Palhallan-Pattan village in Baramulla district, about 32 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"This morning a gunfight broke out at village Palhallan here," a police official posted in Baramulla told Xinhua. "The gunfight broke out after contingents of India troops and police were conducting searches on specific intelligence information suggesting presence of militants in the area."

Local villagers said they heard the sound of gunfire and saw contingents of police and army in the area.

So far there were no immediate reports of any casualties on the either side.

Meanwhile, authorities have suspended mobile Internet service in Baramulla district, fearing it would mobilize people to stage protests.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. Gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region.
